Leadership Profile
Leadership is an important aspect in today’s world. Books, articles, media sources, and many other explore and discuss leadership matters in great detail. Many sources of information can help a scholar have a deeper insight into the topic of leadership. One of these sources is learning about prominent leaders and their leadership styles. The paper explores the leadership of Richard Branson and related it to my own leadership skills.
Leader’s Characteristics and Skills
Richard Branson is the founder of the Virgin Group that today commands more than 400 companies. I have chosen Branson because he is one of the most influential and admired leaders in the modern world (Niphadkar, 2017). What makes Branson more interesting is the fact that he has publicly explained his struggles as a child who dropped out of school and suffered from dyslexia (Bruijl, 2018). Branson also started a business at the young age of 16. He knew that he wanted to become an entrepreneur even from this early age. Despite his early struggles, today, Branson is admired as an inspiration for many with the desire to become leaders.
One of the greatest characteristics of Branson’s leadership that is often cited is his ability to delegate. Branson believes that a leader should have a keen eye on delegating tasks to people capable of completing the task (Bruijl, 2018). He believes that he can assess people’s personality’s and determine if they would be capable of completing the task appropriately. For example, when he set up Virgin Records, he soon left the day-to-day running of the business to other capable individuals. Another skill that Branson possesses is willingness to listen and learn. Branson claims that any business leader should listen and learn because information is constantly being updated and the industry changing (Niphadkar, 2017). An attentive leader will learn vital information that would be useful in making vital decisions.
Branson also believes in risk taking. For example, despite the fact that some people may have a fear of running many businesses, his Virgin Group consist of more than 400 companies. He is constantly looking for new opportunities and takes risks (Bruijl, 2018). For example, he founded a space company in 2004 something that many entrepreneurs may not focus on. Also, Branson takes a hand-on approach to leadership. Branson believes in engaging, connecting, and working closely with employees. In a public interview, Branson claimed that he always tries to find time and be among his employees and staff (Niphadkar, 2017). The process of engaging and interacting warmly with employees allows them to feel like part of the team and valued for their contributions.
Comparison to Personal Characteristic and Skills
Using the leadership self-assessment guide, I scored high in integrity and honesty with a score of 4/5. I have always believed in honesty when interacting with others. I feel that followers would be more trusting when they know that the leader upholds honesty and integrity (SHRM, 2020). This mirrors Branson’s character of showing w...
