The U.S. Army and Major General, David Petraeus focused on establishing a strategy that would control, spare, and enhance the Mosul's stability. General Petraeus employed a leadership strategy that resulted in reconstructing and governing Mosul, while the officers conducted civilian tasks (Barbier, 2004). As a result, the 101s strategy exhibited by the general in the high risk and challenging environment resulted in a successful mission. Although the environment was challenging and risky, the general used the skills mentioned above on mission command and nation-building in attempts to restructure Mosul.
The skills used focused on securing the place, educating, and transforming the local police to safeguard borders and civilians' operations. The general exhibited a unique understanding of the science of war, enabling his officers to acquire a comprehensive vision that led to the successful accomplishment of the mission. By gaining control of Mosul, it would reassure the military that the mission overseen by the general was successful. In order to control ensure the sustainability of the operation, the general had to make drastic decisions to control the mission command strategy. In order to attain the objectives of the mission, he visualized the operation through an analysis of the prevailing conditions and understanding the mission factors (Lundberg, 2006).
Mission command is usually the exercise of authority as well as direction offered by the military leader. Through such authority and direction, the team creates a favorable environment and can adapt to the prevailing conditions within the environment. The general was main guided by crucial principles to oversee the mission and ensure the successful takeover of the City of Mosul. With his agile leadership skills, the general created a very cohesive team with a shared understanding of the mission objectives. This was essential in ensuring that the doctor took risks and followed the mission orders correctly. The main task of the commander is to facilitate the operations through activities such as "understand, visualize, describe, direct, lead, and assess" (ADP 6-0, 2012).
Through visualization, the team was able to understand the situation on the ground and create objectives for the mission. Moreover, the general ensured that there was a useful approach that ensured that the team was able to follow and accomplish the set goals. As the mission was being executed, the general was able to understand when, if, and what he should choose as the officers adapted to the changing environment in the mission field. The process of mission command ensured that the art of war and science was applied well, and the nature and design of the operations were practical. The technique applied by the general entailed the following main steps: Mission, Enemy, Terrain, Troops Available, Time Available, and Civil Considerations (METT-TC).
