Introduction
The growth of technology has come with both advantages and disadvantages in society. Social media is one of the technologies that have come with both positive and negative aspects in the society (Andreassen, Pallesen & Griffiths, 2017). The growth of social media has enabled people to be more connected and promoted easy access to information. Social media has also widely been embracedby corporations, whereby they use the different platform's market their products (Cabral, 2008). However, one of the major negative aspects that have come with the embracement of social media in society is an addiction.
This paper examines the problem of addiction caused by social media and also provides solutions to the problem.
Problem analysis
There is a wide range of social media platforms that people use including Facebook and Twitter. These two have the highest number of followers across the world. The easy access to smartphones from countries such as China at relatively lower prices has led to an increase in the number of people owning smartphones. Additionally, people in society have continued to invest in a smartphoneto ensure that they remain connected and also continue reading the posts about other people (Peck, 2018).
Although some people may be addicted to social media, most argue that they are not addicted. Therefore, in order to identify the level of addition to social media, firstly, it is important to examine the time spent on social media. Addicted people tend to only focus on social media and direct much of their attention and time on social media. Apart from spending much time on social media, addicted uses tend to forego other useful activities such as their children with their homework.

Unlike in the past, people are no longer required to travel to connect with a loved one. Although this is a positive that has come with social media, it has created a physical disconnection which is important in society. People are increasingly being drawn virtual connection even when they are close distance, therefore removing the lively human aspect of social interactions (Bentley, 2018).
Addiction to social media also comes with potential health risk problems to the users. When people spend their time on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, they usually spend much time sited rather than engaging in active activities. Sitting dormant can lead to accumulation of body fats, therefore, leading to an increase in body weight (Peck, 2018). The excessive use of social media is connected to the increase in body weight because of the failure of engaging in heavy physical activities.
Social media is also connected to an increase in the level of depression. Thisis caused by the fact that people tend to compare their lives with the lives of other people often online. For instance, on Facebook, people post their pictures ab...
