Assignment Description for Final Paper

“Pilot study” proposal

(6 full pages, double spaces, 12 point font APA style.)

In this paper, you will use the research discussed in one “Spotlight on Scholarship” piece from Katherine Miller’s communication textbook Organizational communication: approaches and processes. 7th Edition, to pose a research question for further exploration of a phenomenon of interest to you. You will demonstrate your mastery of course concepts by selecting and applying appropriate theoretical and methodological approaches to fit your question(s). This exercise will require demonstration of original thought as you describe and explain to the reader a problem or issue that invites the application of organizational communication theory and a proposed method. Show me that you can use, extend (and perhaps challenge) ideas from TWO different chapters in developing this pilot study proposal.

How to start

You may start with concepts, theories or perspectives you find interesting and then think of a way to explore them in an organizational communication approach.  Alternately, start with an organizational communication phenomenon you are interested in understanding, and then look for the existing theory and research in our book chapters to help you to explore it.

Read the “Spotlight on scholarship” article summaries in  chapters you find most interesting and relevant. Then, retrieve and read the full research article of one of these “spotlights”. Do this early --using library databases to search for citations by author, title or publication.  If you have any difficulty retrieving the original articles, please see me or a reference librarian for help. Please start now. Do not put this off.

Take notes. You should be able to discern the following:

1. What is the Research Question in each article and What Org comm. approach (es) inform the author(s)’ work? (Classical, Human relations, Human Resources, Systems, Cultural, Critical, Feminist?)

2. How do you know this? (identify key terms, concepts, citations or  ideas indicating  links between the spotlight research articles and some specific approach/tradition in the field). Look for these in the articles’ introductions and or literature review sections

3.Examine the design of the studies and the methods used. Did the authors start with a theory or theories and construct a hypothesis or multiple hypotheses) to test in research, or did the authors engage in some form of observation in an organizational communication setting and them arrive at some insight based on thematic analysis of what emerged from the observational study?

4. What are the significant insights/findings of this research?

5. What would you borrow, adapt or otherwise change to add to the perspective or approach the author(s) used in their work in order propose a completely different study of your own?  Imagine using this approach in conjunction with elements from a second article from  another approach  to examine an organizational communication situation or process of interest to you.

PROMPT STRUCTURE FOR YOUR PILOT PROPOSAL

A pilot study often takes the form of an initial plan or proposal for research based on some informal observations or questions.

Choose an organization you know well or would like to know more about, and discuss some approaches and processes that come to mind when you think about this organization, having read the Miller text.

Pilot Study Proposal Name Institution Date   Approaches and Processes  I am interested in understanding how compassion is integrated in the organizational culture, and will use the cultural as well as the human resources and relations approach.  The healthcare organization will be known as “the Platform” and since there is emphasis on compassionate care in the industry would want to know whether this is prioritized and what affects the ability of the employees to show compassion. Lilius et al (2011) focused on compassion in the workplace and how everyday practices affected the way the employees interacted. Organizational culture is dynamic and may change over time, ii there is an option of new values, but if people favor certain values more than others will likely be the most dominant.  The way employees respond to conflict is another aspect of the organization culture and if there is compassion, it is likely that individuals forgive their colleagues. It is necessary to know this as the organizational practices drive the workplace climate.  Since communication is also depend on shared meanings, The processes focus on organization leadership and emotion in the workplace as the way organizations management enhance and support compassion depends on the workplace culture and their attitudes towards this. While compassionate response in the workplace may be related to official direction, organizations that are resilient do not require such directions to facilitate compassion. Sometimes a change in culture may occur depending on those recruited as they run the day to day activates. For instance, if younger people were to replace older ones in the workplace, it is more likely that they will hold different attitudes and workplace habits.   The employees in an organization ought to fit in with the organization culture, but since they hold different attitudes and beliefs, how then do they understand and show compassion.   Describing the setting In the healthcare organization, there are shared beliefs and values like in any other workplace, but what is unique is that in the sector the objectivity of maximizing revenue is not such a priority a business organization.  This even explains the values and beliefs that are prominent in the organization, but since there is a  common goal that the employees seek to achieve does their understanding  of compassion differ, if this is so how does it influence how they interact and resolve conflicts. I will focus on compassion and how communication explains the organization culture. The human resources and relations and the cultural approaches are relevant in the subject matter since the subject of compassion is closely intertwined with organizational culture.   There are various views of organizational culture, and one aspect is that they are emergent because they are associated with the social interaction of the members (Lilius et al., 2011). Compassion alleviates the suffering of other people and the healthcare practitioners are well suited to undertake this, and embedding compassion in the organization seems like a natural fi...
