As can be seen in the graph, the differences in male characteristics within each species of heron only account for 4.5% of the total variation. For instance, the size difference between male and female great blue herons, which ranges from 6 to 8 pounds, is the greatest defining characteristic between the sexes of this species. Males can grow up to 54 inches in length, while females can only grow as tall as 36 to 40 inches. Males also have somewhat larger bills than females (Ward).
Male herons are the first to grow white feathers and black pigment on their chests before the females are, making their distinctions considerably more obvious in the early stages of life. Additionally, it is apparent that as they begin to grow, the males' legs turn orange before the females', while the latter's legs stay gray. Male and female differences extend beyond just physical characteristics; it is clear that the two sexes behave very differently. In order to select the ideal location to build a nest while they are wooing their partner, males typically arrive first in their nesting ground during mating season.Males provide the materials for the females to build their nests, however occasionally the females will repurpose an old nest to lay their eggs.
