Why did you choose this artist?

When I first saw videos about Gregory Crewdson in the class, I was deeply attracted by his method of taking photos. For a majority of photographer, they tend to catch or record a moment, which is also my previous definition for photography. But to Gregory Crewdson, he prefers to create cinematic scenes according to his psycho world and presents a passive and sad atmosphere. I especially like that he called himself “storyteller”. Similarly, I also want to use camera on my hands to tell and retell my stories.

Photographer Gregory Crewdson
Author Name
Institution Affiliation
Born in September 1962, Gregory Crewdson is a famous American photographer who has gained recognition the world over for photographing tableaux American homes and neighborhoods (Summers, 2000). He is also known for his outstanding photographic techniques, and his ability to stage tremendous cinema style scenes caught my eye and changed my definition of photography.
Gregory Crewdson’s process of taking photographs is different from other contemporary photographers (2007). He works with the crew members, who are experienced in their respective fields (lighting, production design, etc). They use styles, equipment, and techniques that are used in motion picture films on large sets. Crewdson has a strong visual sense and knows what he wants from his picture. Instead of waiting for a moment to happen, he creates his own environment while taking a photograph or picture.
Composition is often seen in the photographic series of Gregory Crewdson. His subject is always on the right track, meaning in the center of the frame, as Gregory Crewdson uses the rule of thirds (Lane, 2009). Where he wants to photograph multiple people in a single shot, he fills the frame as per the story he has in his mind. It is evident after seeing his picture that, not all but most, have so much detail in it. Crewdson has artfully used subframes to focus on his subject within the camera frame. This compositional style adds extra layers of mystery in his work. It is important to mention that Gregory Crewdson mixes conventional and experimental techniques in his work.
It’s safe to say that Gregory Crewdson’s work has its unique idea or concept. To put this out in plain words, he l...
