“Playing for Time” by Arthur Miller is a movie that was released in 1980. The show is an intimate drama and is one of the most powerful TV events of its time. “Playing for Time is a moving story that intuitively looks into the changes and emotions that were dominant in the imprisonment times that led to family separations, changed the relations and tested the strength of the people that were not ready for the Hitler barbarism. In the film, there is a scene where Fania and Alma have to perform for the orchestra with a song from “Madame Butterfly” (Eischeid 2). In this scene, it presents simple but profound contradictions that are reflected in the entire film. The film exemplifies a somber story of intense struggle against the unimaginable circumstances. The film is hard-hitting as the unimaginable was a reality for the large Jews that were captive and killed in the Holocaust.
Fania is a Jewish woman and has to perform alongside Alma who is a German woman. The film is a story of the absurd elements where the people in the camp are in the midst of suffering but at the same time, they have to remain loyal, this is seen from the performance of Fania and Alma. They have to put in the best performance to save their lives. From the conversation of the two, Alma tells Fania that “if we fall below, anything is possible.” Therefore, it is up to them to ensure that their performance is above the average.
