Accordingly, Alice in Wonderland is a timeless literary work that has captivated readers for generations with its whimsical narrative and imaginative world. Written by Lewis Carroll and published in 1865, the novel follows the journey of a young girl named Alice as she falls down a rabbit hole into a nonsensical and fantastical realm. The novel's enduring popularity can be attributed to its ability to resonate with audiences of all ages, inviting readers into a realm of imagination and challenging conventional logic.
Accordingly, the research question that forms the basis of this study is – What visual methods and techniques can be applied to understand the messages in Alice in Wonderland? While the novel is primarily known for its rich textual narrative, this research aims to explore the visual aspects of the work and examine how they contribute to the understanding of its underlying messages. By investigating the visual methods and techniques employed in illustrations and film adaptations, this study seeks to shed light on the visual storytelling elements that enhance the interpretation of the work.
In line with this, the author believes this research holds significant importance as it offers a fresh perspective on Alice in Wonderland by delving into its visual dimension. Specifically, by analyzing the visual representations, this study aims to uncover hidden meanings, symbols, and metaphors that may not be apparent through textual analysis alone. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the visual methods and techniques used to convey the messages in the novel, thus enriching our appreciation of Carroll's creative vision and the enduring appeal of Alice in Wonderland in popular culture.
Objectives
This research aims to identify and analyze the visual methods and techniques employed in illustrations and film adaptations of Alice in Wonderland. Specifically, the study aims to explore the relationship between visual elements and the messages conveyed in the narrative, investigate how visual cues enhance the interpretation of key themes and motifs, and develop a framework for analyzing and understanding the visual aspects of the work.
Additionally, the scope of this research will focus on a selected sample of illustrations and film adaptations, both historical and contemporary, to examine the visual storytelling techniques employed. The study will employ a qualitative research approach, using systematic data collection and analysis methods to interpret the visual cues and symbols in the selected visuals.
