The outcomes for this Session Long Project include introducing some information about how the social, political, or religious history influenced the art or artist you have chosen to reflect on. You must chose a different artist or artwork from those presented in the Case Assignment.  Your reflection should identify some of the typical values and characteristics of Renaissance art. This information should, ultimately, serve to inform your own personal reaction to the artwork and/or the artist. You have the opportunity to make connections between your own personal interests and the concepts you are learning. You have more freedom to engage with particular issues are of interest to you. However, your engagement must reflect the research and background information you have read for the course module. Make sure to include the image itself or a link to it in your text.

Peter Paul Rubens was born during 1577 in Germany. The Italian renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo greatly influenced Rubens in artistic work. He was successful in entire disciplines of art (historical and allegorical works, animal painting, portrait art, landscaping painting, and religious art. Ruben was part of the late renaissance period in Italy during 16th century, and he gained fame for his illusionistic and colors decorations (Enenkel, De Jong and De Landtsheer, 2001). Ruben was a devoted catholic who painted religious ideals. He travelled widely where he received commissions to work in England, Belgium, Spain and Italy. Rubens made great altarpiece “the Decent from the Cross” in Antwerp Cathedral. These altarpieces established him as the best artist in Fianders.
Rubens was among the late renaissance artist. Late renaissance art was the climax of renaissance art, and it was featured by growth of creative genius. Particularly, painting reached its climax of heroic composition, enriched artistic imagination, as well as technical competence. Late renaissance was mainly characterized by painting based on balance and harmony in design, and mannerism aesthetic style was majorly emphasized which greatly valued refined elegance and grace (Bossy, Brothers and McEnroe, 2001). Creative art of individual virtuosity was a significant characteristic of artistic achievement.
“The Descent from the Cross” is the one of famous artwork designed by Rubens, which was one of his counter-reformation alter pieces. According to Motturre and O’Malley (2011), this artwork was designed for the Cathedral of Our Lady in Belgium during 1612 and 1614. In this altarpiece, Rubens shows Jesus Christ being held by disciples (Joseph, Nicodemus and John the evangelist). Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea are represented opposite each (one who black robe while the other one on another side) other trying to hold Jesus while John is in the bright red robes.
