Chapter 1: Recognition and assistance 1950-1953
This chapter details the early contacts between Ho Chin Mh and CCP and the historical perspective of why Mao decided to work with Ho chin Mh to resist the French. It highlights Mao’s reasons for involvement in the war. Details of the communications between China and the Ho Chin Mh troops show the deep relationship the two parties had before the war. The chapter also highlights on Chen Geng and the border campaign which was meant to exterminate French forces on the Chinese border and institute a clear link of communication with China. This marked the start of active Beijing involvement with Vietnam. The book details the campaign and the role of Chinese in fighting the French for the control of the border and the reorganizations that followed. Later in the chapter, the author highlights the proposition by Beijing on new land reforms and it's perceived impact it would have in the war. This chapter content revolves around the early Chinese involvement in Vietnam and the reasons for the mutual interest each party had in uniting to fight the war on the same front.
Chapter 2: From Dien Bien Phu to Geneva
This chapter features the details of the Viet Minh advances northwest and their intentions. The chapter describes the resistance they encountered from the French and why they ultimately withdrew though partially to re-strategize for another attack. Chapter 2 also describes how the Navarre plan was planned by the French to withdraw the scattered French troops and consolidate their forces in attacking Viet Minh in the Red River Delta. It also highlights the US involvement in the conflict. It also has the description of Dien Bien Phu conflict. The chapter also details how Mao used Vietnam war to command a better negotiating position in the Geneva peace conference after h had suffered defeat in Korea. It highlights the role of Zhou Eli in calling for the political, social and cultural cohesion of the Asians and negotiated withdrawal of DRV in Laos and Cambodia. The author also explores the Chinese role in the first Indochina war citing mutual and self-interests of the parties involved.
Chapter3: Consolidation and Unification 1954-1961
This chapter describes what followed the Geneva conference and why Chinese government sought to consolidate their efforts in developing their country. Their foreign Minister, Zhou Enlai was tasked with negotiating for peace deals and advancing the Beijing agenda in the region by wooing neutralist Laos and Cambodia. Beijing agenda was driven away US influence from over its borders as it was an imminent threat to Chinese strategic goals in the region especially resisting imperialism. China compromised on reiterating from imposing communism in these countries abstaining from influencing their internal affairs. It also details how the Chinese government positioned themselves to meet Hanoi’s demands without compromising their influence in the region. they wanted to reconstruct the north whilst unifying the south.
