Steinbeck is one author that keeps the audience glued to the piece. His characterization is second to none. For instance, Elisa is brought out as a hardworking woman, who ploughed orchards and cut hay while preparing for rain the following season. She would cut the old years’ chrysanthemum stalks with a pair of short scissors to make the garden ready. With this, Steinbeck not only points at the Elisa’s nature but also delves into the society at that given time. It was a society that solely depended on agriculture. For instance, a lady came to borrow some seeds from Elisa. Since Elisa had chrysanthemums in her garden, she knew that it was easier to root a little spout to make them multiply. Through such expositions, one can understand how crucial agriculture was to the society at that given instance.
