In this piece, Massey seeks to explain the central nature or the importance of cities to the idea of neoliberal globalization. However, even as this article does acknowledge this, it also cautions that because of their unique features and differences, cities feature differently in this concept. The complex nature of certain cities which transcend the cultures of the world as well as other dynamics that might be in play makes the entire idea all possible.
One important piece of evidence that is shown in the article is the idea that what is exhibited in the local realm might be a product of what is exhibited in the global realm. Well, the article does insist that the opposite of the above is true and this mimics what the world currently stands for. The local realm or reality does indeed borrow from the global and looking at the global, there are also instances of the local that is evident. These two are interdependent in that they both build the ideas of each other. So, Massey argues that in this way, cities are alike.
Another issue that is covered in the article is the marginalization that often happens in cities. Massey notes that “the very characterization of cities as ‘global’ is a strategy whereby the part stands in for the whole, where the city is defined by its elite, and the rest are consigned to invisibility.” This is evident and characteristic of what happens when development happens within the quarters of a few factors. Development should thus transcend all quarters and entertain the idea of inclusivity.
