Disordered Eating in Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes among adolescents not only leads to challenges in blood glucose control, familial relationships, and physical growth, but it is also associated with body image dissatisfaction and disordered eating behavior (DEB). DEB entails various eating disorder pathologies, namely dieting to control weight, purging behaviors, binge eating, and full syndrome eating disorder. The prevalence of eating disorders and DEB among teenagers with type 1 diabetes range from 10% to 49%. Cherubini et al.’s (2018) study involved 219 adolescents aged between 11 and 20 years from Marche, Italy, who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes over a year ago prior to the start of the study (Cherubini et al., 2018). One hundred and sixty-three participants completed the Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised (DEPS-R) questionnaire (Cherubini et al., 2018). The study outcomes indicated that there is a high prevalence of DEB among adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Many of these people become overweight or obese due to poor eating habits.
