Brief Summary
On Sunday, January 10th, six people were chased from the Sydney Cricket Ground during a cricket match between Australia and India. These happenings followed after the match was overshadowed by allegations of racist abuse. When bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj heard racist slurs from the chanting crowd, the whole Indian team filed an official complaint (Sinnott, 2021). These allegations also halted play during the Test. During the unfortunate incident, Cricket Australia demanded from the NSW Police and the security staff to eject the group from the crowd. In a statement to its website, the International Cricket Council highlighted under its anti-discrimination policy that Cricket Australia is mandated to investigate the incident and take the required action to ensure the matter was appropriately dealt with (Sinnott, 2021). The ICC chief executive reiterated that there is no place for discrimination in the cricket sport and they are disappointed that a small section of fans thought that the abhorrent behavior was permissible.
Personal Opinion
Many a time, professional athletes are victims of vicious stereotypes and racist tropes. Sports have a legion of followers akin to religious organizations and the passion they wield towards their favorite teams is unmatched. However, many of these people suffer racial abuse, especially at the hands of their own fans. Instances of racial abuse are on the rise, especially in soccer, cricket, and basketball.
