Globally, patients undergo treatment with the hope of getting better. However, at times some therapies prove to be ineffective. According to Lilienfeld (2007), treatments can be harmful with roughly 10% of patients reported to getting worse after starting treatments leading to psychological harm, physical harm or both. On the other hand, Barlow (2010), found that the safety of treatments remains persistent and prevalent. Even though it has been recognized that a nontrivial minority of people become worse following treatment, it would be simplistic to argue that they necessarily become worse due to such treatments (Dimidjian & Hollon, 2010). As a result, this ideology has spurred controversial debates among psychologists over the years centered on differentiating between harmful therapies and therapists.
