The story is about a teenage boy named Darius Holmsby. Darius is an African American who has a writing talent. He has won a contest and has been invited to the gala to claim his price. His favorite teacher Mr. Gould had told him he was gifted and had encouraged him to apply to the contest. Darius is from a poor background and everyone in his family has made a contribution so that he looks presentable at the gala where he expects to meet white people of class.
