Implications/Themes Identified by Norton: Sex had Two Possible Determinants

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Please Read Below
The case of T. Hall provides some pretty incredible insight into the early years of the Virginia Colony. Please note that the evidence suggests that Hall was intersex, meaning Hall had BOTH male and female anatomy. Because Hall was not singularly male or female, the community did not know how to categorize someone who was not easily categorizable. The way that they dealt with this situation shows us what they valued in their society--and who was involved in problem-solving. It is important that we avoid modern associations or phraseology here. This is an examination of a court case in the past, and the goal is to use it to understand people of the past. The point is not to judge them by our standards (because they would almost certainly fall short), but to try to make sense of how they understood and ordered their own world. Chances are we won't agree with the way the case was handled, but judgment and opinions are not the focus here. Rather, I want you to think about what this case and the actions of the people involved in it reveal about their world.
Choose three of the implications listed below that were identified by Norton in the article and explain in complete sentences what the case of T. Hall revealed. For clarity, please create a separate paragraph with the implication listed for each of the three that you choose to describe.

The people were confused because there were instances Hall dressed as a woman and other times as a man. Sex had two possible determinants, which include either male or female, which implies that an intersex person was not entirely welcomed or recognized hence, the reporting to the authorities. The above was based on the genitalia or physical attributes. However, another determinant was cultural, including how one behaved, as was the case in Hall who had feminine behaviors and male genitalia, based on the scrutiny from the women.
The Importance of Clothing
There was confusion regarding the clothes that Hall should wear. This is base...
