Being Transgender Reflection
The article I have selected is "Being Transgender," based on a grounded theory analysis. I selected this article because it gives a different perspective about transgender identity development and the fact that it explores the importance of understanding our sexuality and gender identities. Understanding gender identity and sexual identity is imperative to consider in social work clinical practice because, for fear of unfavorable judgments, aggression, or prejudice, most transgender individuals suppress their sexual identity in public. This leaves the practitioners all the work to identify them and help them because they are the only individuals who can provide non-judgmental support. For instance, Levitt et al. (2014) state that the study he performed was facilitated by the prevalence of transgender experiences, which gave optimism to a child subjected to a lot of judgment and scrutinizing. This proves that transgender individuals undergo a lot and often need people they can trust and talk to. In this case, these individuals are probably the clinicians with whom they have developed a unique relationship. Social workers must understand sexual orientation because proactive therapy, which acknowledges LGBTQ people's orientations and experiences, can help lessen societal and family disapproval, eliminate discrimination, and overcome sentiments of alienation by providing a consistent source of support. Transgender individuals want to be accepted in society and be treated like other individuals; they want to live freely without the fear of being discriminated against or facing violence. However, the more they seek this peace, the more they are disappointed because, to some extent, it is impossible. Levitt et al.
