Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course              Date of Submission History Questions Uncle Tom’s Cabin Stowe wishes to evoke emotions of compassion towards the suffering of the black community by showing the sacrifice of Tom. The other emotion Stowe wishes to evoke is that of hope for the black community. This is explained through the sacrifice of Tom to save his friends. Through race, Stowe shows that black people experience the same pain as that of the white people. This means just like Tom did, black people could be also do noble things just like whites. These emotional reactions would have contributed to sectional conflicts because slave owners would not view black as noble people. The sacrifice of a black man would not have been viewed as heroic but instead it would have been seen as going against authority. Martyrdom is a religious symbol that represents Tom as he chooses to die to save others in relation to the black community. Salvation is another religious symbol portraying Tom’s killers as they are seen repenting of their crimes. A slave being depicted as a Martyr aims to show that the struggle of a few black people would ensure their complete liberation. However, to the Southern slaveholders the character of Tom would be viewed as rebellion against authority. The northern white readers would be sympathetic to the plight of the black people and hope for their liberation. For the Africans, a slave depicted as a martyr would increase their motivation to fight for their freedom. The other factor that may have made it a war song is the fact that it focused on efforts of one man that gradually contributed to the American Civil war. “John Brown's knapsack is strapped upon his back” would have reminded the northern audience of his fight in the battlefield because it signifies someone striving outside carrying a burden. The words, “Now, three rousing cheers for the Union!” would also have reminded the northern audiences of the efforts of the Union Army which was fighting against separation, and calling for the abolish slavery.  The subject of the original song fits into “Battle Hymn” because Julia Howes was upset that the abolitionists did not seem to bring the change they promised. In most part, the abolitionist had just written laws but did not actively make any actions that showed that they were fighting against slavery. When the northerners sang this song in musters and parades it was an appreciation of the effort, work, and purpose of the Union Army. The Union Army was now beginning to actively work to abolish slavery in the south and this was a call for celebration. Their singing also showed that they embraced the efforts of the war to bring peace in American land by stopping the separatists in the south.
