Yes, it is important that you understand the terms, but a paper that simply reads as “The music changed to a duple meter.” comes across as dry and boring. Is it important for the analysis and compare/contrast portion that the music changed to a duple meter? If so, then explain why. If not, then don’t include it in your paper.
2. If the pieces you select are primarily vocal, be careful to make sure you still talk about the music itself and not just the meaning of the text to which that music is set. It can be very easy to get bogged down in what the song is about instead of what is happening musically.
3. No outside research is necessary for this assignment. Everything you write should be your reactions and interpretations of what you hear and see. If you feel strongly that you must use an outside source, then you must cite it like you would in any research paper. To do otherwise is plagiarism, even if you paraphrase.
4. Edit and proofread multiple times to ensure that there are no mistakes with spelling, punctuation, or capitalization.
5. Titles of music should be capitalized and either in italics or with quotation marks

For my paper, I’m comparing/contrasting two traditional rounds: “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Dona Nobis Pacem.” The link for the first piece can be found here: https://www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=iiRJ20LPTv0. I chose these pieces because I have an affinity for rounds and wanted to see how two of my all-time favorites compared to each other.
The performance of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat '' is full of enthusiasm! It begins with two monophonic repetitions of the main melody by the choir and audience. At the 0:20 mark, the conductor divides the performers into two parts, creating a polyphonic round. At the 0:40 mark, two parts become four as the round reaches its maximum potential. As this is an energized round performance, the dynamics and tempo do not fluctuate from their loud and lively beginning.
“Dona Nobis Pacem” begins with a piano introduction. At the 0:19 mark, a woman enters and sings an entire verse alone with piano accompaniment, making a homophonic setting. After this verse, the round begins at 1:14 as two more women complete the round format, echoing each other until the final voice completes the verse. The mood and style is very relaxed and expressive, never growing beyond a mezzo-forte dynamic.
Despite being similar in format, the performances of these rounds are very different. While “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” can be divided into four groups, “Dona Nobis Pacem” only has the capacity to split into three parts. The performance of the former is also much livelier and staccato when compared to the somber and legato performance of the latter.
I preferred the performance of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” because the performers (both on stage and in the audience) seemed to be enjoying the experience more than the professional performers in “Dona Nobis Pacem.” As an audience member listening to these performances, I wanted to join in the fun of the former! Watching two rounds really showed me how two pieces that have so much in common can also have even more that sets them apart. I can only imagine that listening to a third round would only expose more contrasts within the nursery rhyme genre!

Teresa Carreno (1853-1917), a Venezuelan concert pianist, composer, conductor, and even an opera singer, became labeled a child prodigy from an early age. Teresa was first taught piano by her father and introduced to the works of the great composer Louis Moreau. Teresa adored this composer, who is considered the first American Virtuosos. Teresa’s family traveled to the United States at the age of seven. On the other hand, Ethel Smyth was born in London in 1858. Ethel's father was generally opposed to his daughter studying music, but Ethel did not care, and she began studying privately at the age of seventeen. It is essential to like these two composers' background upbringing and exposure because they later greatly influence their musical journey.
Ethel Smyth is hailed as an equal parts talented composer, a key element in her music. She is also known to champion feminism and write six operas, organ pieces, art songs, ballet, string quartets, and various orchestral works. She also wrote books in the later years before her death. When one listens to the musical execution of her kind spirit Teresa Carreno, one has to admire the gracefulness and ease upon which she exudes. Some of their significant achievements happened during her travels to Europe and performing in concerts as a pianist and composer. There is a reason why she is famously referred to as the girl who played for President Lincoln. Such a multi-talented musician as herself, as one can imagine, commanded the most genuine admiration even...
