1 As I watched the movie "Twelve O'Clock High," I couldn't help but reflect on the contrasting leadership styles portrayed. With his Theory X mindset, Colonel Davenport believed that people were inherently lazy and needed strict supervision. His traditional approach created a team fueled by fear, resulting in underperformance. On the other hand, General Savage embodied the Theory Y style, seeing his team as motivated and capable individuals. By valuing their input, fostering cooperation, and promoting autonomy, he rejuvenated the group, boosting morale and productivity.
2 When reflecting on leadership, it is essential to consider the personality traits that contribute to success in this role. Accuracy, consistency, adaptability, and neutrality come to mind, but it's equally important to emphasize my personal qualities. As someone who takes on leadership responsibilities, I understand the significance of responsibility, fairness, and compassion in everything I do. These characteristics ensure clear communication, fair decision-making, and the ability to respond effectively to various situations, all while prioritizing the well-being and growth of my team.
3 The power of a leader to inspire and convey a clear vision is truly remarkable. It struck me while listening to Martin Luther King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. His eloquence and passion rallied millions around a vision of racial equality. Similarly, in the Dead Poets Society, Professor Keating ignited his students' curiosity and independent thinking by creating an atmosphere of trust and psychological safety.
