1. What is the spiritual practice and cultural and personal meaning of the Pow Wow as explained by the commentators in the documentary? (at least 2-3 complete sentences for this one)
2. What was the meaning/purpose behind the traditional Hula dance? What does it celebrate? What is the meaning of the hand gestures? (At least 3 complete sentences for this one)
4. Judy Mitoma (Documentary commentator) talks about the "joining of voices" as an alternate choice to the practice of cultural stealing or taking. The Netherlands Dance Theater choreographer talks about his process of borrowing movement ideas and taking inspiration from another culture, specifically the aboriginal peoples. He explains his process of going about this in a way that is in his mind, NOT mimicking and NOT cultural theft. He shares that he thinks he accomplishes this by creating his own movement vocabulary, while only using their traditional dances as his inspiration. He qualifies his process of doing this as a respectful way to avoid cultural theft and appropriation. On the other hand, Peter Cleary (documentary commentator) has been studying with this group of aboriginals for many many years, and talks about the Netherlands Dance Theater as "carrying a tradition they don't understand".
After listening to the instructor's opinion and commentary on this scenario at the end of the video, what do you think? Is the Netherlands Dance Theater choreographer on the right track? Why or why not? What is potentially problematic about this scenario in your perspective? (1 complete paragraph)
What do you think Peter Cleary means when he says they are carrying a tradition they don't fully comprehend or understand? How is this connected perhaps to the process in which the Netherlands Dance Theater went about doing movement/ethnographic research within the aboriginal group? Do you think it was thorough enough? Acceptable? Respectful? Why or why not? What do you think would need to happen for this process to be a "Joining of voices" as Judy Mitoma suggests? (1 complete paragraph)
