Now that the literature review has been completed, the text reading this week covers how important theories can be highlighted that will support your research topic. For example, particular groups may naturally link to known theories, such as feminist theory for women’s perspectives, or queer theory for perspectives from the LGBTQ community. The text also covers extensive writing tips in regard to scholarly writing which can help you reflect and develop your own scholarly writing in coursework that requires research. A third aim of the discussion is to touch on the integral aspect of preparation for performing research, ensuring you have considered the ethical concerns and protections for your research participants or subjects.
In your initial post, address the following:
Describe a social theory that was discussed in the “Social Relationships and Health” journal article and indicate how it was used to support the research.
Choose one of the quantitative research results presented in the article; describe the evidence presented and indicate which variables of the experiment were highlighted.
Determine the article’s conclusion in regards to social relationships in society. Based on the accompanying media piece “Why Facebook Could Be Good for Your Health
(Links to an external site.)
,” how could modern social media sites support the research findings in the journal article?
The course text reading discussed how research can also use the transformative paradigm in social theory to impact social change. How does it do this and what types of societal populations can the transformative paradigm specifically impact?
An important aspect of impactful research is that it should be disseminated through a scholarly document such as a research report or journal article. The author of the course text provides some helpful tips in scholarly writing. What tips did you find most useful to further develop your own scholarly writing in course work which requires research papers or a project?
Lastly, a research study should always be ethically performed. According to the course text reading and your review of the video, “Research Ethics Involving Human Subjects
(Links to an external site.)
”, answer the following:
The Belmont Report of 1979 established three ethical principles for research. Name the three principles and explain each principle.
All Universities and Research Institutions are federally mandated to follow ethics guidelines in the research performed which include the principles of The Belmont Report of 1979 – name what this set of guidelines is commonly known as, and describe what it covers.

Social Theory
In their article, House, Landis, and Umberson (1988) discussed the social support theory and used it to support their research. The social support theory proposes that social relationships play a role in moderating the effects of deteriorating health arising from stressful situations. This theory explains the causal relationship between social relationships and health outcomes. The authors of the article used the theory to help them identify, synthesize, and interpret empirical data relevant to their research topic. The theory acted as a bridge between what the authors were trying to find out and what is already known about the topic.
Quantitative Research Results
One of the quantitative research results shared in the article is the results by Orth-Gomer et al., which analyzed mortality among Swedish adults based on the frequency of their social interactions. The results revealed that the risk of death was greatest among adults who were most socially isolated, who accounted for a third of the whole sample. In addition, the results indicated that the effects of social contact with others on health were more prominent in men than in women. In this particular study, the independent and dependent variables were highlighted. The independent variable was the social contact with family, co-workers, and neighbors. The high the frequency of these contacts, the more socially integrated the participants were, and vice versa. The dependent variable was mortality.
Article’s Conclusion
The authors concluded that there exists a relationship between social interactions and mortality. Specifically, the lack of social relationships was linked to an increased risk of death. However, the authors also note that there is a need for research in three key areas: (1) the mechanisms and processes that connect the existence/absence of social relationships to positive/negative health outcomes, (2) the determinants of social relationships, using social relationships as the dependent variable, and (3) how to reduce social isolation and its effects on health.
Also, based on the article by Mohammed (2018) on how Facebook can promote good health, it is evident that social media sites provide a platform where people can gain a sense of relatedness and interaction with their loved ones, especially in long-distance situations. Social media sites provide people with an opportunity to share their life with others and actively engage them through direct messaging, comments, and likes. However, they could also lead to more social isolation as people ar...
