Rethinking Global Cities in the Pandemic Era
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that cities’ designs need to be changed. People residing in metropolitan areas have been adversely affected by coronavirus since they cannot socially distance themselves and others live in deplorable conditions in slums (Ellis, 2020). In particular, the time has come to reevaluate how cities are built, lived in, and maintained. For example, cities should have hospitals to cater to the needs of the growing population. Of the 4 billion individuals residing in cities, 1 out of 3 lives in slums (Ellis, 2020). In other words, controlling the spread of coronavirus in highly congested areas where people share social amenities, such as playgrounds, transport, and recreational facilities, can be challenging if the current cities’ designs are not changed.
