WHITE RIBBON AUSTRALIA: ON THE MOVE TO ELIMINATE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AMID COVID-19
The White Ribbon Australia marks the end of its successful campaign on the domestic violence against women in Australia. Through this movement, the organization highlighted the increasing number of victims and compared it to the pre-pandemic situation, cooperated with local government units to provide monetary support to the organizations assisting the victims, and provided adequate mental health services to the victims to reduce their trauma.
Hayley Foster, chief executive of Women’s Safety, New South Wales, iterates that the coronavirus pandemic’s beginning marks one of the worst eras for domestic violence. According to Foster, some of the most commonly reported cases were strangulation, sexual assaults, severe head injuries, and death threats (Kennedy, 2020).
In support of Foster’s statements, the Australian Institute of Criminology explained that from July of 2020, 10% of Australian women in a relationship became a victim of domestic violence.
