Purpose of the Research, Problem, and Questions
Kemp et al.’s “Empty Streets, Busy Internet: A Time-Series Analysis of Cybercrime and Fraud Trends During COVID-19” shows that there have been unprecedented changes in people’s daily activities brought by the coronavirus. For example, when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the United Kingdom (UK) government and others implemented various lockdown measures to curb its spread. The article depicts the relationship between cybercrime and lifestyle changes during the coronavirus pandemic (Kemp et al., 2021). One of the most significant questions it asks is: Why have fraud levels increased in the UK during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic?
Study Design
Researchers gathered data from various sources to test their three primary hypotheses. Hypothesis one was that changes in fraud and cybercrime increased significantly during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic (Kemp et al., 2021). Hypothesis two was that traditional offline fraud decreased during the first few months of the coronavirus pandemic. Hypothesis three was that cyber-enabled fraud and victimization were greater during the first few months of the coronavirus pandemic for individuals than for corporations (Kemp et al., 2021). Moreover, researchers used the univariate ARIMA model, a time-series data analysis method that uses past observations to predict future values.
Qualitative Research was Conducted
Kemp et al. (2021) used different sources, where some of them were from Europol. The Internet Organized Crime Threat Assessment (IPCTA) 2020 report from Europol showed that the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the rate of cybercrime activities. Additionally, Interpol’s 2020 report called “Cybercrime: COVID-19 Impact” made it clear that there has been a sharp increase in Internet fraud or cybercriminal activities during the coronavirus pandemic (Kemp et al., 2021). Researchers managed to gather numerous sources about the rate of cybercrime during the COVID-19 pandemic before they concluded.
