Isabet et al.’s “Social Telepresence Robots: A Narrative Review of Experiments Involving Older Adults Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic” depicts how technology has significantly changed the healthcare system. Mobile telepresence robots (MTR) became popular during the coronavirus pandemic. They are equipped with a speaker, monitor, camera, body on wheels, and a microphone (Isabet, Pino, Lewis, Benveniste, & Rigaud, 2021). These electronic gadgets are remote-controlled and have improved the relationship between doctors and their patients. For example, physicians can monitor and assess their patients’ health conditions remotely.
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) depicted that MTR improves patient care in healthcare facilities. Many hospitals are implementing telepresence robots to help physicians consult their patients without necessarily being physically present. For instance, Dignity Health uses MTR in its intensive care units and diagnoses stroke patients for all its 32 hospitals in California (International Federation of Robotics, 2020). A doctor from the hospital said that distance is no longer a barrier to proper healthcare accessibility since one can interact with patients even when they are at their homes.
