The share of Hispanic and Asian Americans has increased considerably since the 1960s, and especially for Hispanics. The population share of Non-Hispanic whites has declined gradually, while that of African Americas has remained stable at between 10-13% in the same period. Slightly less than half of all whites are Protestants, while it is more than 60% for African Americans and just less than 50% of all Hispanics are Catholics. Asian Americans are the most diverse religious-wise and have a higher proportion of unaffiliated people with any religion. There has been a decline in the percentage of people identifying as Christians. There has also been an increase in non-Christians and the unaffiliated (Pew Research, 2015). Non- Hispanic whites make about 16% of the population compared to 18% for Hispanics/ Latino and 13% for blacks, and 5-6% for Asian Americans. Pacific Islander or Native American is less than 5% of the US population.
Hispanics and Asian Americans will continue to increase faster than other groups, partly because of immigration and higher birth rates. On the other hand, whites have a higher median age and lower birth rates. They will still constitute the largest demographic group (Taylor, 2014). Nonetheless, their population will increase at lower rates. Slightly more than half the population is female, and women have, on average live longer.
In the 114th Congress after the 2014 election, those elected were 80% white, 80% male, and 92 % Christians (Bump 2014) and (Norén, 2012). The 114th Congress was more diverse than previous congresses....
