Work stress is known worldwide as one of the major challenges that affect the worker’s health, hence translating this into the performance and production of the organization. However, there are several approaches that the company can take to deal with the worker’s stresses. These include:
i) Using Ergonomics
Ergonomics refers to marching of the employees with the appropriate working tool to improve productivity while minimizing injuries and accident in the working environment such as a workshop. Different tools have different purposes in the workshop. Subsequently, workers should not gamble over using a given tool over the other to accomplish a given task. The scarcity of working tool in the working station is recognized as one of the main causes of stress in the working environment. For instance, the tendency of using an appropriate tool for the desired task creates satisfaction to the employees hence reducing stress to them, a well designed chair to reduce and do away with back pains.
ii) Improving Work and Environmental Designs
The working environment dictates the working behavior of the employee. In most cases, workers feel satisfied working for places where health and safety are the first priorities. Otherwise, employees feel insecure in carrying out various procedures to improve production, thus leading to stress. Working environment should be well ventilated, good lighting and spacious to allow different operations without the congestion of employees. Under these conditions, incidences of suffocation from industrial emissions of smokes and poisonous gasses remain minimal. For example, safety devices such as earmuffs, helmets, gloves, overalls, and gumboots are essential to protect workers from extreme health issues (Choudhury, 2013). Occasionally, when the employees are exposed to high-pitched sounds, they suffer from working stress. As a result, they lack motivation in achieving various tasks assigned to them. Continuous exposure to sounds and vibrations may expose employees to suffer of other health problems such as deafness and high blood pressure.
The working tools should be positioned within the reach of the employees. The working tables should be reachable to the employees without involving awkward styles of getting to them. The positions of the working tools should be based on the height and the body width of the employees. If the company has absorbed several short employees, they should accomplish various tasks without stressful approaches. Similarly, the working floor should be clean and dry to prevent injurious incidences such as slipping. Machines tools should be located appropriately depending on the purpose. The switching boards should be well positioned to enhance immediate worker’s response to different occurrence (George & Jones, 2012).
iii) Organization and Management Development
