Homelessness: The Greater Risk and the Potentially Effective Policy to Solve it

As you have read this week, there is no single definition of poverty. However, an important indicator of both absolute and relative poverty is the ability to meet basic survival needs like food and shelter. In fact, the ability to secure and maintain safe and affordable housing is a particularly important aspect of survival that has a large impact on individuals’ health and well-being. This discussion asks you to examine two social problems that are closely related: poverty and housing security. After reviewing the resources above, please address the following:
Poverty and Homelessness: Using the sociological imagination you can see how what may, at first glance, seem like personal problems are really social problems that are experienced widely by groups of people. Almost every community in the U.S. faces homelessness, an issue many see as a consequence of individual choices (i.e., laziness), but is actually a result of broader social and economic problems experienced more widely in society.
Using your sociological imagination, describe why homelessness is a social problem.
What factors or characteristics put people at greater risk for homelessness? In other words, which groups in society are at a greater risk for experiencing homelessness? Why?
Provide an example of a potentially effective policy or advocacy response to the problem of homelessness. Define the elements that would make this solution effective.
Eviction: The lack of affordable housing sits at the root of many other social problems, from poverty and homelessness to educational disparities and health problems. The increasing prevalence of eviction in the United States has contributed to these problems.

web page, describe the eviction rate and the poverty rate of the state where you live (if you are currently living outside the U.S., please choose a state that you have some personal connection to). How does your state compare to the national average?
Using the Eviction Rankings: Top Evicting Large Cities in the United States

web page, type in the city where you live (you may have to choose a larger city that is close to where you live) and explain how it compares to the ranking of top evicting large cities presented on the website.

Homelessness is a prevalent social issue based on its social and economic factors, such as family breakdown, lack of affordable housing, and poverty. Besides, drug abuse, mental health issues, and fleeing from another country contribute to homelessness. The challenges that homeless individuals encounter result from illnesses and inadequate housing facilities. As a result of homeless conditions, homeless individuals suffer from contagious and respiratory diseases. Equally, the victims are susceptible to diseases that result from poor hygiene. Although poverty is the leading cause of homelessness, poverty itself is not a naturally occurring phenomenon. Homelessness is a social problem that results from poverty if the victims lack access to affordable housing.
What factors or characteristics put people at greater risk for homelessness? In other words, which groups in society are at a greater risk for experiencing homelessness? Why?
Poverty is a state in which an individual or a community lacks access to essentials of minimum standard of living, such as shelter, food, clothing, and financial resources. In most instances, economically deprived individuals suffer from hunger, unemployment and are unable to attend school. Homelessness became a social problem following the civil war of the 1870s and has been a prevalent issue ever since (State of Homelessness, 2020). Therefore, poverty is a societal flaw as opposed to an individual’s shortcomings. Homeless occurs as a result of poverty if the victims are unable to afford habitable housing. Racial segregation, lack of social support systems, and housing instability are factors that put people at more significant risks of homelessness.
According to Statistics, blacks and Hispanics are at a greater risk of poverty and homelessness across the United States. The victims of domestic violence are susceptible to homelessness since underlying conflict can influence them to move out of their homes, thus leaving them without safe shelter. Equally, mental health victims are exposed to homelessness due to a lack of support from community members and access to affordable housing. Equally, victims of severe mental health issues can encounter behavior problems, thus making it difficult for them to maintain daily living activities. Limited access to healthcare, insufficient funding, lack of affordable housing are factors that result in high rates of homelessness as a global health issue
Provide an example of a potentially effective policy or advocacy response to the problem of homelessness. Define the elements that would make this solution effective
Proven housing-based policies, such as federal housing assistance, effectively address the prevalent issue of homelessness across the United States. Federal housing vouchers and public housing are the most effective housing-based solutions in addressing the social problem of homelessness. According to Clifford et al. (2019), permanent supportive housing can be a cost-effective solution to the prevailing homelessness crisis. The model can combine vital support services and affordable housing assistance, especially to...
