The Civil War in America began in 1861, following tensions between the northern and southern states over slavery. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the leading causes of the civil war.
The compromise of 1850 arose around California's admission to America as a free state that would imbalance free states and slave states. The 1850 compromise aimed to appease both Northern and Southern States to avoid Civil War (Maizlish, 2018). California would join the Union being a free, non-slavery state. Slave trade in the capital city, Washington, was outlawed. A comprehensive fugitives slaves act was also introduced, which compelled the Northern States to return the slaves that had escaped to the South. The Act's contents led to increased tension following the fierce resistance of the Act by the abolitionists, which contributed to the War Between the States.
