In the first documentary, Julia and Nate Sharpe raise their children in a gender-neutral environment, where they allow their kids to choose based on their preference without instigating the male and female stereotypes. They do not tell them and other people about their children’s sex. This is because they do not want their twins to have limitations in self-expression. After all, males are not allowed to show empathy and vulnerability compared to females, who are always branded for their fragility. They claim that through this, their twins can freely move, speak, and act in the environment they introduced because they do not have any idea of the society’s branding that “some children are she and some children are he.” (NBC News, 2020). Conversely, the parents in The New Yorker (2020) documentary stated that they did not want their child to suffer from the ill pressures of society.
Based on evolutionary psychology, the gender stereotypes were based on the experiences of the people historically, such that men are more inclined to survive while women’s qualities are based on reproduction.
