Foreign World Leader: Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand Psychology Paper

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Choose a current (foreign) world leader and write a concise paper on his/her psychological profile to the best of your abilities. Judging simply by past and current actions, identify the following:
1. Strengths and weaknesses of the leader
2. The leader’s ability to compromise
3. The US’s interest in the chosen leader’s country and politics
4. The foreign leader’s interest in the US and its politics
5. Potential collaboration points and potential clashing points between the US and the foreign leader’s country
6. Potential dangers to US national security stemming from this leader’s country/ tendencies
7. Techniques and incentives for a good cooperation in the future for both the US and the foreign leader’s country
You are not expected to look at this as might a professional in the field of psychology. However, one of the most important abilities for a diplomat is to have at least basic understanding of people’s characters and what makes them the way they are (sometimes going on quite limited information). This is your chance to put yourself in such a situation and see what you might learn from the research you will do. This assignment should be between 3-5 pages (not including title page and bibliography).
You may use credible online news and analysis sources.

Jacinda Ardern - Psychological Profile
Jacinda Ardern is the leader of the New Zealand Labor Party and the 40th New Zealand Prime Minister, elected to office in 2017 (Labour, n.d.). In addition to her role as the Prime Minister, she is also responsible for three ministries; National Security and Intelligence, Arts, Culture and Heritage, and Child Poverty Reduction.
Strengths and Weaknesses
As it is for any leader, Ardern has her share of strengths and weaknesses that have impacted her leadership.
Strengths
* She is intuitive: Ardern has managed to be the leader she is because she trusts her instincts. As she revealed in an interview with the Guardian, becoming the leader of the New Zealand Labor Party so close to an election, and eventually becoming the Prime Minister, was because she trusts her instincts (Blackwell, 2020).
* She is empathetic: Empathy and compassion are at the basis of Ardern’s leadership. She displayed this strength of empathy after the terrorist attack in New Zealand where 51 people died (Blackwell, 2020).
* She is authentic: To Ardern, leadership is not about being what you think you should be, but being who you are (Blackwell, 2020). She has used kindness as her value even in trying moments.
Weakness
* Her kindness is often mistaken as a lack of assertiveness (Blackwell, 2020): Politics are associated with toughness, and being kind and tough do not always go hand in hand.
Ability to Compromise
Ardern’s ability to compromise was first revealed when she garnered the support of the New Zealand First Party to form a government coalition. Before this coalition, Ardern’s Labor Party was in a race with the National Party and needed the support of the New Zealand First Party to form a government after an inconclusive election. Before the coalition, Arden had tried to distance herself from the First party because its leader is an anti-immigrant who believes the immigrants in New Zealand are to blame for New Zealand’s problems (Greenfield & Costa, 2020). However, Ardern was able to strike a deal with the First Party by newly focusing on immigration policies. Also, Ardern had promised to make sure that the agriculture sector joined the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) during her tenure but she had to compromise (Vance, 2019). Instead of farmers joining the ETS, they were required to form an alternative scheme to help in carbon emission reduction. This was a compromise because the New Zealand First Party, which supported Ardern’s party to form the current government, did not want farmers to join the ETS. Ardern’s compromise allowed her to meet the needs of her supporters while still addressing the issue.
US’s Interest in New Zealand
The US and New Zealand bilateral relationships not only facilitate trade between the two countries but also cooperation in common areas of interest. The US has economic interests in New Zealand. New Zealand supplies the US with meat, wine, machinery, and dairy products. Also, New Zealand is home to substantial US foreign direct investment. Specifically, US FDI is focused on the finance and manufacturing industries (U.S. Department o...
