Time Management and Unhealthy Diet
Behavioral self-management refers to the process where an individual modifies his or her behavior by systematically managing cognitive processes, contingent consequences, and cues (Gilmore, 2020). By using this approach, a person can change a behavior that might be detrimental to his or her health or social interactions. In particular, the behavior I need to change is the lack of regular physical exercises and eating habits. Some of the specific measurable behaviors that I should decrease are eating junk food and avoiding physical activities. Moreover, I need to increase my behaviors, such as eating a nutritious diet by preparing it at home, jogging, and walking.
I have found out that eating too much food is one of the obstacles that prevent me from exercising regularly. My daily routine is waking up and having breakfast before heading to school or engaging in other activities. I am used to driving such that even when going somewhere within a one-mile radius, I get into the car and drive there. The presence of restaurants near where I live has contributed to my behavior of eating fast food, which hinders me from preparing nutritious food at home. These factors significantly influence my behavior pattern, and I cannot change if I sustain them. As such, I will do away with them all so that I can adopt a healthy lifestyle.
Social cognitive theory can apply well to the change in my behavior. Indeed, it posits that human behaviors are significantly affected by environmental, personal, and behavioral factors. The social cognitive concept makes it clear that individuals learn through their experiences and by observing others’ actions and their consequences. The primary factors that can trigger behavioral change include reinforcement, observational learning, self-efficacy, and self-control (“Social and Behavioral Theories,” 2016). Therefore, after a person sets a goal that he or she wants to achieve, the above components are effective interventions.
