The Political Framework
Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville, NC, is one of the most extensive medical facilities with over 650 beds. The hospital serves more than 1 million outpatients and inpatients annually. The private, not-for-profit organization has over 3,000 workers and earns annual revenue of almost $2.7B (Cape Fear Valley Health, n.d). It offers a broad range of specialized services such as rehabilitation services, psychiatric services, pediatric care, neonatal intensive care, heart surgery, and cancer treatment, which makes it a modern comprehensive healthcare center. It also provides residents of southeastern North Carolina, Cumberland County, and Fayetteville a patient service tower that houses intensive care units for heart, surgical, and medical patients, a new open heart facility, and a delivery unit (Cape Fear Valley Health, n.d). Cape Fear Valley Hospital is proud to be the 7th largest medical facility in the state through its service to the community for many years.
Informal communication, coalition building, and networking are my organization’s most notable political activities. The hospital’s leadership leverages coalitions and networks to strengthen health programs, influence financing and policy, and mobilize political will. It takes advantage of the member’s skills and capabilities to make collective demands to the government, present a unified front, and plan joint advocacy programs and campaigns by sharing workload and resources. Informal communication, which occurs through gossip and rumors, is the other political activity that permeates my organization. This communication form is usually spontaneous and occurs due to interpersonal connections. Put another way, it does not have a specific purpose or agenda and emerges at the organizational level. The hospital setting significantly increases the sharing of gossip, given the high-stress work environment. Informal communication within the hospital significantly impacts the practitioner, especially nurses. The two political activities are of particular note at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, given the facility’s important role in the community.
Informal communication, coalition, and network building remarkably impact advocacy and conflict. Bolman and Deal’s political framework suggests that controlling symbols and meaning or framing is one of the salient sources of power (Bolman & Deal, 2017). Information communication within an organization can present adverse effects and must be reframed. Opinion leaders and elites can articulate myths and shape meaning that expresses values, beliefs, and identity. Simply put, informal communication, primarily through gossip, should not be ignored based on its overall impact.
