Humans have to be prepared to handle a wide array of hardships so that they can cope with different challenges. It ensures that we can handle various complex situations without being stressed. John Green’s The Fault in our Stars (2012) is about recovering from cancer and findings hope at a time of many difficulties. Gus and Hazel experience various issues that typically affect teenagers, as well as psychological and physical conflicts that arise due to cancer, but they still manage to travel and enjoy each other’s company (Green, 2012). Humans have to be prepared to face hardships since it is common for different unfortunate events to arise, which forces a person to adapt quickly.
I have also been involved in different hardships over the years, and the only option was facing my problems head-on. It is challenging to avoid misfortunes, and some of them are unpredictable and can arise at any time. For instance, there was a time I had financial issues and did not have any friend or family who could assist me. It was a challenging time, but I manage to survive through the struggle until I resolved my financial issues. I believe that humans have to persevere through the circumstances. Even though we might end up being stressed due to the hardship, finding a solution is an ultimate goal that an individual should pursue. In the novel, Gus and Hazel visit their favorite author, have a common interest that involves reading books, and they are also in love with each other (Patmarinanta & Ernawati, 2016). They decide to live a fulfilling life despite their worried parents, breathing tubes and impending death.
Hazel has thyroid cancer, which is at stage 4, and her chance for recovery are dim. It is a difficult time for her, and it makes her depressed, and this forces her mother to encourage her to take part in a support group for cancer survivors (Green, 2012). The novel shows that hardships are typical, and sometimes we need others who have undergone a similar experience to cope. Support groups allow individuals to realize that their issues are not unique and that other people have also suffered the same fate in the past. Since others have managed to cope with the difficulties, then it is easier for a person to be encouraged and be hopeful that they will get better.
