1 Chief of Defense Staff Jonathan Vince engaged in a sexual relationship with Major Kellie Brennan since 2001, back when he was a battalion commander and she was his subordinate at CFP Gagetown in New Brunswick. While the two initially dated openly while at Gagetown, their relationship would ultimately evolve into a series of clandestine sexual meetings that would continue even when started working as chief of Land Force Central Area, headquartered in Toronto (Hopper, 2021).
2 The two would continue having intimate encounters even after Vance was married and was sworn in as chief of the defense staff in July 2015. This illicit 20 year old would result in Brennan bearing a child, a fact Vince denied when allegations of his inappropriate relationship first surfaced. He would later be charged with obstruction of justice by not only lying about his inappropriate sexual relationship with Brennan but also counselling her to lie to military police, even resorting to intimidation to secure her silence (Hopper, 2021).
3 Although the affair appeared to be consensual, Brennan stated that she felt obliged to continue the intimate relationship and that Vance abused his authority to hold back Brennan’s career and even impede a separate rape case against another soldier who raped Brennan in order to avoid their inappropriate relationship from coming to light (Hopper, 2021).
