Topic:
Prevention of diabetes

Identification of Focus for Community Teaching
Today, young adults are more prone to diabetes than a decade ago. This can be associated with poor eating habits and lack of physical exercise. Lack of information among the youths on their lifestyle and food choices can be related to the rising number of diabetes.
Epidemiological Rationale for Topic
Diabetes is a global health threat that affects people from all walks of life. The disease causes many deaths and disabilities, needless to mention the higher costs of treatment. The condition is more common in people above the age of 30 than young adults below 20 years. One in five adolescents and one in four young adults are living with pre-diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). In the United States, for example, over 210,000 young adults have diabetes. Besides, a significant number of adolescents lose their lives to diabetes every year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). On the other hand, research shows that over 61% of students have access to junk food in school and 75% at home. Similarly, less than 24% of young adults aged between 6-20 years participate in physical activity (Reyes-Velázquez & Hoffman, 2011). This explains why the rates of diabetes have been declining in other age brackets except for adolescents and young people.
Nursing Diagnosis:
Lack of knowledge is directly linked to the high number of diabetic people. For example, the impact of junk foods and lack of physical exercise. If this situation is not well addressed, there will be a massive influx of patients in health care facilities soon.
Readiness for Learning:
The continuous curiosity can portray the readiness for learning by adolescents about their body change, frequent inquiries about the growth of their body, endless desire, and consumption of junk foods. Likewise, youths are also concerned with approaches to maintaining healthy bodies and minimizing instances of becoming obese.
Learning Theory to Be Utilized:
Vygotsky's social constructivism theory emphasizes the importance of cultural and social interactions in the learning process. For this reason, I believe that youths' social and cultural backgrounds influence young adults’ food choices and lack of physical activity (Liu & Chen, 2010). I will leverage social constructivism theory with the hope that with continuous interactions, adolescents can learn from each other and their peers. I will use exercises and demonstrations to pinpoint the content of this proposal. Be...
