A Critical Review of Two Texts
This assignment requires you to compare and critically appraise two academic texts.
Type of texts: One of these texts we choose. The other one texts can be on-line articles, journal articles, reports of different studies, written versions of conference papers or chapters from books. You should choose texts that present different arguments or offer different solutions to a particular ‘problem’ or issue that is important in your field.
Structure:
The structure you choose to follow for Assignment depends to some extent on the texts you have chosen. The following sets out possible structures:
Introduction: Information about the topic/area of research. Identify the 2 articles and their main purpose |

Explanatory notes:
Initial evaluation: Don’t just provide information about the authors/publication, draw conclusions based on the available information.
Summary: This should be brief about 1 – 2 paragraphs in length.
Critical evaluation: Use the relevant critical framework. For example, if the texts chosen present different arguments or offer different solutions to a particular ‘problem’ or issue that is important in your field, you should critically evaluate the arguments or solutions offered (Content Analysis). If you are reviewing a new technology you should consider its possible applications and any implications there may be for its implementation in different contexts.
Conclusion: Your conclusion could draw comparisons between the texts e.g. You could comment on how the texts relate to one another (e.g. Does the second text provide more information? Does it present conflicting information or opinions? Does it use a different methodological approach?
It should end with an overall statement about how the two texts contribute to our knowledge/research in the field or about the topic.
Length: 1000 words
Assessment criteria

Critical Evaluation: Improved Hand Hygiene and Aseptic Techniques in the Operating Room
Introduction
The hand hygiene and standard aseptic techniques in the operating room are significantly effective measures implemented to reduce the rate of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).This assignment aims to critically appraise the research articles by Andersson et al. (2018) and Quilab, Johnson, Schadt, & Mitchell (2019) on the topic of hand hygein and aseptic techniques. However, the research methods used in both studies are different. The topic of aseptic techniques and hand hygiene in the operating room has been selected as a topic for appraisal. The topic of Aseptic Techniques and Hand Hygiene measures is of prime importance particularly in the increasing incidences of hospital acquired infections among different departments of the health care settings.
Initial Evaluation
The first article was published by Andersson et al. (2018), whereas the second article that has been selected for comparison was presented by Quilab, Johnson, Schadt, & Mitchell (2019). Both articles presented a similar aim of assessing hand hygiene in a health care setting to control hospital acquired infections (HAIs). Andersson et al. (2018) evaluated the process of hand hygiene through the implementation of “Theory-Driven Knowledge Translation Program” for the aseptic techniques in the operating rooms (ORs). However, Quilab et al. (2019) assessed the impact of unit in-service education related to the compliance of hand hygiene in the “Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory department in a tertiary hospital” in Florida.
Summary
Andersson et al. (2018) presented that the aseptic techniques and hand hygiene measures are important in the prevention of HAIs, whereas its adequate implementation in the ORs is not fully developed. The researchers selected an department, where interventions were based on person centeredness, culture, and organizational learning. The data was collected through a thematic approach retrieved from participants’ observation. The methodology involves natural conversations and unobtrusive observations of interactions, including informal interviews. The results indicated certain barriers towards change, including concerns about psychological safety, distrust and strong boundaries between professional groups, and doubts about the practice of hand hygiene’s effectiveness in the prevention of HAIs.
They implemented Theory-based KT strategy which facilitated the regular dialogue meetings between the managers and selected professional groups. The researchers concluded that the physicians and nurses should be encouraged to perceive hand hygiene and hospital acquired infections as meaning-making and participatory processes, rather than a one-way directed compliance.
The second research by Quilab et al. (2019) indicated adequate hand hygiene as an efficient measure in reducing the incidence of HAIs that entails special attention in the health care settings. They examined the effect of unit in-service education regarding the com...
