The healthcare industry, just like any other type of industry, has enjoyed its own sets of ups and downs. Among its lows, the industry has experienced issues to do with nursing shortages, nursing staff turnover, nurse staffing ratios, unit closures among others. Nursing shortages and nursing staff turnover is still a challenge to the health care system and health care organization. Just like any other organization, personnel management, capacity building, and development are essential towards mutual benefit for both the staffs and the team. Nursing shortage and turnover are usually as a result of a negative factor within the medical environment.
How Nursing Leaders Ought to Approach Nurses Shortages and Nurses Staff Turnover.
It is always bound to be quite a tricky and tedious task for nursing leaders to be able to strike a balance between management of the medical institutions and the observation of the nurses’ welfare. At all times, the nurses' leaders must ensure a shared vision within the department and organization, build trust between the leadership and the general staff and among the staff. This will call for a high level of integrity and competency of the lead nurse. The leaders and managers are usually the ones who bear much of the brunt when it comes to poor performances at the workplace by the nurses. As a result, they are supposed to ensure that these nurses perform to the optimum.
Also, the lead nurse ensures a work environment that is healthy and consistently builds the capacity of the staff to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in their services. Nursing as a profession has however risen above challenges through training and retraining of the nurses on leadership and management styles and approaches which have proven very useful in the management of their respective departments in the health care organization (Whitehead et.al., 2014).
Nursing staff’s shortages and turnover are inevitable in any health care system. How the nursing department head goes about the issues to find an amicable solution is what's important. Nursing shortages could be due to many reasons ranging from increased health care services needs that exceed the staffs available to lack of financial capacity to employ adequate nursing staff by the health care organization and beyond. Similarly, nursing staff turnover could result from staff resignation due to 'employees poaching,' poor pay and work conditions among others (Schultz, 2013).
In the case of leadership however, there is a broader application of authority compared to a nursing manager who is just supposed to address a localized sphere of influence. How the nursing leadership and management handles the challenge will create the difference between success and failure of the organization. These shortages and turnovers create changes in the health care organizational system (Schultz, 2013). To respond or adapt to the changes, we either 'join the flow' or 'reorganize' ourselves; where the choosing the former presents uncertain and danger towards the activities and the general goal of the system or department.
