Sources and Types of Power used in the Situation
The intern demonstrated two significant types of power when instilling knowledge of conflict resolution strategies among the nurses. These include informational and expert power. Informational power is when one has the information others need to thrive and be assisted in something (Yukl, 2017). Having the knowledge and the information on how to solve conflicts among nurses places the intern in a position of respect and leadership. Due to this power, conflicting nurses are likely to refer to and seek him when conflict arises. As the adage of all times goes, knowledge is power. Knowing something others don't and being confident about is reason enough to hold a power element.
Expert power is when one has the skills and experience to comprehend a situation, draft solutions, and use sound judgment. When exposed to such expertise, they are likely to stand out and outshine others, which makes them offer a listening ear and impeccable respect (Peyton et al., 2019). Additionally, expert power can motivate one to build confidence, gain a reputation for rational thinking, and improve decision-making. The intern demonstrates excellent expertise and skills in conflict resolution, which reduced conflict scenarios by seventy percent in three months. The power sources used in the Situation include personal and positional sources. Personal sources of leadership are characterized by the leader’s personal attributes that place them in a leadership position (Brass, 2017). For instance, the intern demonstrates excellent skills and knowledge in conflict resolution, which grants him expert power. Positional sources include a person's ranking and privileges that place them in an advantaged leadership position (Brass, 2017). For instance, the intern has exquisite information on enabling and improving conflict resolution among nurses, which grants him informational power.
Motivation Theory used in the Situation
Maslow's Hierarchy theory explains the five basic needs that are essential for the growth and advancement of human beings. They include physiological, safety, social, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs (Wang et al., 2020). Once a need misses in a person's daily life, their behavior is also likely to change, and their priorities immediately shift to satisfy the missing essential requirement (Wang et al., 2020). For nurses, a healthy working environment is vital to the quality of healthcare services they are expected to offer. Once a need misses from their system, they will likely find themselves in conflicts and misunderstandings, as witnessed in the case scenario.
