An individual's cultural background significantly affects their capability to comprehend messages. Canada is a nation in North America inhabited mostly by indigenous people. Canadian culture is significantly influenced by British, French, and American ways of life, and the country is identified by its respect, tolerance, and societal orientation. There is a continuous change in culture concerning advanced interaction with other cultures worldwide. On the other hand, Fiji is a country located in Northern Europe. Like in Canada, Fiji's culture evolved with a mixture of European, Chinese, Indian, and other cultures from its pacific neighbors. The nation's culture is renowned for being warm and welcoming, accommodating people from diverse religious backgrounds.
Hall's cultural dimensions are categorized into high and low contexts. Northern European, South American, African, South European, Arab, and Asian countries have high context dimensions. Fiji is situated in Northern Europe. High context culture comprises individuals who communicate implicitly and rely heavily on context. Members of such cultures maintain close and long-lasting relationships with other individuals. The messages are spoken and read between the lines, often implied rather than expressed plainly. Information’s meaning is indirectly communicated via the message’s context. People in this context also exercise good communication characterized by sophistication, nuances, and layered.
On the other hand, Canada is located in North America, which is ranked among low context states. The cultural dimension comprises using direct and frank communications, and the message conveyed delivers its own meaning. Canadian people communicate by paying attention to words and what is said during conversations.
In terms of space, Canadian culture is the center of power, which is territorial. Canadians communicate when there is clearly delineated personal space between oneself and others, and individuals do not like it when others invade their personal space. However, in Fiji's cultural dimension, space is at the center of the community, and people are comfortable sharing personal space with others. In terms of time, Canadian culture is primarily monochronic. Individuals like doing one thing at a time and value orderliness without unnecessary interruptions. Canadians also like to concentrate on one activity at a time and take commitments seriously. People from monochronic cultures respect and support private property. On the other hand, in Fiji, people appreciate polychromic culture. They like to do multiple things simultaneously and integrate work and personal life.
