Nurses face a lot of challenges in their day-in-day-out activities, mostly due to nurse staff shortage that leads to burnout. As an intern in a big referral hospital, I observed nurses overworking and drowning in emotional and physical exhaustion. Sometimes, they would engage in fights, which adversely affected team collaboration and communication. One day at the medical round, I observed two nurses having a verbal fight due to a misunderstanding as a result of miscommunication. The nurses had mixed up their work schedules and one of them had come in late for her night shift, which made the other one agitated. Having little to do to solve the conflict as mere interns, we all focused on our different roles and assumed the incident. Over time, the dissatisfaction among nurses affected quality healthcare delivery which was evident through negative patient feedback, increased medical errors, long hospital stays, and increased hospital visits. As we neared our internship exit, one of my fellow interns boldly decided to engage in conflict resolution strategies to facilitate better conflict management among nurses which would increase quality healthcare delivery.
The intern exhibited exemplary leadership by conducting a one-week campaign to educate nurses on better conflict resolution strategies. In his plan, he applied a ten-step strategy which first included assessing the situation that provokes the conflict. Secondly, taking time to comprehend the conflict and determine major concerns and desired outcomes. Thirdly, addressing the conflict while it still has relevance and before it creates a tense environment.
