Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) can participate in policy-making through professional nursing associations such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) that promotes and publishes advocacy tools. Nurses support advocacy as part of the organizations where organizations take a stand on policy issues agreed upon by nurses. For instance, the ANA has highlighted and called for changes to address the nursing shortage and give nurses more opportunities to advance their knowledge to provide better care services (Hunter, 2021). RNs and APRNs participate in advocacy initiatives. Another opportunity is advocacy in the workplace, including when there are change initiatives to improve the quality of care. RNs and APRNs use the best evidence to support decisions in the workplace.
Challenges in Policy-Making Participation
There are challenges such as ineffective communication and resistance to change in the workplace among the stakeholders. There are various stakeholders in ANA, and there may not have a unified voice, and some entities' views may be overrepresented when there is ineffective communication.
