Currently, most healthcare systems are faced with various challenges that require adequate addressing to enhance the provision of care to patients. In essence, nursing is a field in healthcare that is characterized by several challenges and problems. It is without a doubt that failure to establish solutions to these problems will put constraints on the quality of health care provided. However, as Catalano (2015) states, the application of optimal approaches to respond to nursing challenges will only be effective by first understanding the nature of these challenges. This paper will discuss several challenges faced by leaders in health care organizations, the impact of these challenges, the role of communication and teamwork in solving the challenges as well as methods of fostering and improving communication and collaboration in health care organizations.
Challenges faced by our Organization
Every health care system is faced with various challenging situations that tend to affect the provision of care to patients, families, and communities. In this regard, our organization is currently experiencing several challenges, thus affecting our service delivery to patients and the community as a whole. As a department, the two issues which our organization is facing are registered nurse shortage and poor job satisfaction. However, we are also making efforts to come with approaches to help us deal with these two challenges.
Registered Nursing Shortage
Over the past year, the organization has been facing the challenges of shortage in registered nursing. The problem of shortage in nurses has been on the increase, thus affecting the quality of care provided to patients. This is because the delivery of care to patients is an initiative that requires a well-collaborated approach that involves several health care practitioners such as physicians, nurses, and allied health providers, among others. As a result, the continued shortage of nurses also affected other health professionals in our organization. This is a challenge that has resulted in the rendering of quality care to patients a challenging task (Catalano, 2015). One of the reasons for the shortage in nurses is the significant expansion our organization has witnessed, leading to a high number of patients seeking our services. On the other hand, the number of registered nurses we have hired has not been proportional to the number of patients who require their services. In this case, nurses are assigned extra duties in a bid to cover for the nursing shortage in our organization. Subsequently, the nursing shortage is one of the significant challenges our organization is currently facing.
Poor Job Satisfaction
Our organization is also facing the challenge of poor job satisfaction in recent months. We have noted that this is a problem that has impaired the output and commitment of our staff.
