A- Risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the loss of more than “500 ml of blood after vaginal birth” or “1000 ml after cesarean birth” (Ricci, Kyle & Carman, 2020). Uterine atony (failure uterine contraction and retraction after delivery) is the most common cause of postpartum hemorrhage (Ricci, Kyle & Carman, 2020). Tammy has had nine previous pregnancies for the past nine years, and multiparity (more than five pregnancies) is the main risk factor for postpartum hemorrhage. Grand-multiparous mothers like Tammy with close pregnancies are at a higher risk of postpartum hemorrhage. Overdistension of the uterus after multiple pregnancies also increases the risk of excessive bleeding. Another risk factor for postpartum hemorrhage is epidural anesthesia that has resulted in decreased sensation in her legs.
