A healthy community depicts a developing and caring society that pays attention to the basic needs of its citizens. Countries allocate a significant percentage of their budget to the healthcare sector. The world’s economy is dependent on the health of the people and hence the huge emphasis on the sector. According to a 2014 article by the Healthy People, individuals often fall sick or are healthy primarily because of some determinants. The determinants which range from social, economic, personal as well as environmental factors include social factors, individual behavior, biology and genetics, policy making, and health services. This article will explore and provide a description of how the individual behavior factor affects patients while also drawing connections to Nies and McEwen’s (2015) Public Health Intervention Wheel.
A person’s choices and actions impact their health and wellbeing to a large extent. Recently, there have been reports that support the notion that one’s behavior directly influences their health. For example, a study by Alameda County in 2005 established that a link exists between one’s way of life and choices and long-term health outcomes. It is indeed essential that one treads carefully with regards to their health because other reports have also revealed a connection between coronary heart diseases, cancer and other lifestyle diseases to one’s behavior and daily decisions. Drug use, for example, affects one’s health and even though the effects only resonate within an individual, the people who are indirectly affected are many, for instance, one’s family, spouse, children as well as friends.
