Sjogren’s syndrome is an illness that causes an impairment to the immune system, causing the salivary glands to become inflamed. Ninety percent of patients affected are middle-aged women. The gland that makes saliva is attacked by the immune system hence resulting in the dryness of the mouth eyes. The enlargement of salivary glands differs, whereby significant enlargement is seen when Sjogren syndrome occurs alone without the association of connective tissue disorder (Gadodia et al., 2011). At times, it may be associated with other infections, which include lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The disease mostly begins at the age of 40.
It’s mostly diagnosed through the analysis of medical history, conducting tests in eyes and mouth, biopsies, or blood tests. The most effective diagnosis of Sjogren’s syndrome is, however, obtained through imaging through the use of sialography modality.
