In the modern world, nurses are increasingly encountering heterogeneous patients. More individuals from a variety of cultures and ethnicities are now seeking healthcare services. As a result, nurses have to be aware of the various cultural beliefs of the patients to determine the level of tolerance for healthcare. Making decisions regarding the care of patients is usually a long process involving many considerations; including the attitude of patients regarding the care. Due to these reasons, nurses need to be in a position to adapt to different situations especially when it comes to cultural diversity since it has a major impact on the quality of service offered to the clients. Nurses should have sufficient information regarding the customs of their clients so that they can undertake a holistic assessment. Various theories can be used to analyze the cultural competence of nurses. These theories are meant to ensure that nurses offer culturally appropriate and competent care to their patients. This analysis will compare and contrast four major transcultural theories; Leininger Sunrise Model, Purnell Model, and Giger and Davidhizar Model.
Nurse anthropologist Madeleine Leininger developed Leininger Sunrise Model. She wanted to assist researchers in understanding human care and discovering the knowledge that nurses should have to offer care in a world that is becoming multicultural (Betancourt, 2016). Leininger envisioned in the 1950s that humans would interact on a global scale in the future. As a result, Leininger realized that nurses needed to move beyond anthropology and emphasize on individuals from different ethnic backgrounds. During that time, nursing practice mainly involved nurses practising in hospitals and other public health facilities, which limited them from interacting with patients from different cultural backgrounds. On the other hand, the Purnell Model has been used extensively in studying intercultural competence. The model focuses on offering a foundation for understanding the different characteristics of the culture. This enables nurses to consider the various attributes of the patients and how they affect healthcare ad illness.
Both the Leininger Sunrise Model and Purnell Model are critical in assisting nurses in understanding how to deal with individuals from different cultures. In a world where nurses are encountering people from all over the world, it is critical for them to offer care that meets the needs of the various clients (Epstein & Turner, 2015). Nurses are supposed to understand that the cultural backgrounds of patients play a critical role in determining the care that is appropriate for them. Through both theories, nurses get to understand the essence of considering the cultural beliefs of their clients. The theories enable nurses to become aware of the need to offer culturally competent care to patients in an attempt to facilitate the healing process. Combining the two theories in care allow nurses to respect the cultural values of their clients, which in turn, works to meet the need of diverse patients.
