Guidelines for Assignment #2 Summary of Evidence-based Strategies (15 points)

Include your name and the assignment number in the file name. E.g.: K Harris Assignment 2

  • Using the template in Brightspace, develop a table summarizing the literature on evidence-based strategies to address your selected health issue. I’ve attached an example to Brightspace, but you can also see Table 7-2 from Brownson et al. (pp. 169-172) as a guide (also attaching).
  • Start with the evidence-based strategies that you identified in Assignment 1. Add to/amend as needed. You can continue to search for interventions as part of this assignment.
  • Identify at least three evidence-based strategies to address your health issue reflecting at least two ecological levels of intervention.
  • You may enter a program/study more than once if it involves multiple levels of intervention.
  • Using the template provided, complete the following columns in your table, organized by social ecological level of the intervention. (NOTE: several columns from Table 7-2 are combined below):
  1. Source: Lead author, article title, citation (journal, year, volume, issue, pages -can be abbreviated). If the source is a compendium, e.g., County Health Rankings, list that as the source. Include hyperlinks when possible. Include full title and journal citation information in the table, including DOI number link. This will help in understanding the focus of the article, and easily accessing it when you need to go back and get more information.
  2. Study design: This will be discussed in the methods section of the paper. This may not be relevant for compendium-based strategies.
  3. Study population: Age, other demographics, etc. Note the geographic area if relevant. Also include sample size if relevant (e.g., for the evaluation).
  4. Intervention characteristics: Briefly summarize the main intervention strategies and describe the main components of the intervention.

For example:

  • Multicomponent intervention to increase community demand for cancer screening: client reminders, client incentives, small media, mass media, group education, and one-on-one education
  • Built environment approaches combining transportation system interventions with land use and environmental design: policies and projects designed to increase or improve street connectivity; sidewalk and trail infrastructure; bicycle infrastructure; public transit infrastructure and access
  1. Outcomes: Summarize the outcomes achieved by the program. Note the social ecological level of each outcome. Be precise – this will also help you use some of these outcomes in your Theory of Change. Note if the intervention was found to be ineffective for any of the outcomes examined; this is also helpful for developing a theory of change

For example:

  • % increase in contraception knowledge (individual level); X increase in CBO referrals to reproductive health centers (organizational level); % decrease in teen pregnancy (community level)
  1. Conclusions: Main recommendations. Include any implementation issues or other challenges noted by the authors, including issues related to community engagement, evaluation, and sustainability.
  2. Other comments: Implications for developing a multi-level, community intervention (e.g., how transferable these results are to your target community/population).

Individual Level Interventions

McLeod MN, Heller D, Manze MG, Echeverria SE. Police interactions and the mental health of Black Americans: a systematic review. Journal of racial and ethnic health disparities. 2020 Feb;7:10-27. https://doi.org/10.1007/s40615-019-00629-1

Black Americans

Review of 11 studies

N/A (review of studies examining the association between police interactions and mental health outcomes)

Most of the studies (6 of 11) reviewed found statistically significant associations between police interactions and mental health (psychotic experiences, psychological distress, depression, PTSD, anxiety, suicidal ideation and attempts), indicating a nearly twofold higher prevalence of poor mental health among those reporting a prior police interaction compared to those with no interaction.

Although better quality studies are needed, findings suggest an association between police interactions and negative mental health outcomes. Changes in law enforcement policy, development and implementation of a validated instrument for police experiences, improved community outreach, a federally mandated review of policy and practice in police departments, and expanded police training initiatives could reduce the potential negative mental health impact of police interactions on Black Americans.

The review included 11 studies, with eight receiving a fair quality rating, two receiving a poor rating, and one receiving a good rating. The types of police interaction reported among study participants included police use of force during arrest, police stops, police searches, exposure to police killings, and interactions with police in the court system.

Interpersonal Level Interventions

Cross-sectional study

Black women residing in Baltimore, MD

(nβ€―=β€―310) recruited
from STD clinics
into a retrospective
cohort study
(2013–2018) on
sexual assault and
HIV risk.

310 Social support and
resilience served
as coping
variables and were
assessed as
mediators in the
associations
between perceived
stress and mental
health.

Almost half of the sample (46%) experienced severe depression and about one-third (27%) experienced severe PTSD. Resilience partially mediated the association between perceived stress and severe depressive symptoms among exposed women. Social support partially mediated the association between perceived stress and severe PTSD symptoms among exposed women.

The study found that perceived stress is very strongly associat...
